Words are not always necessary for the language of expression, especially for children. Therefore, words are not necessary for Sand Therapy. Miniature images, symbols, and figures can be used as expression to create scenes, worlds, patterns, or a dramatic play process. This gives expression to non-verbal emotional issues in a contained space where one can experience control and safety.
Sand Therapy is an expressive play therapy method that can be utilized by all ages and groups to express something or "tell a story." Sand has been used for centuries in art and healing rituals by Indigenous Peoples and other cultures. Sand is of the earth. It reconnects and grounds an individual in a way that is not possible by any other media. If you have spent time at the beach, you have possibly experienced digging and building; maybe watched children doing this. Often this is reported as calming and sometimes people have satisfying feelings. There is a healing effect sand has in its quality.
